Geffrye museum

Geffrye Museum

A fascinating museum, set on the edge of Dalston, depicting the changes and history in family life through the centuries

The museum contains nine living rooms spanning 400 years of domestic design and history. Wander through them, marvelling at the transition from 1630s dark wood furniture and panelled walls to late nineties open-plan loft apartment living. The contrast between the spaces reveals a considerable amount about changing priorities and attitudes. Afterwards, explore the beautiful gardens which are similarly set out as a series of ‘rooms’ from the 17th to the 20th century. The museum has a fantastic photographic archive of real houses, collected over the years and which were donated to the museum by families. The museum plays host to events such as the Ceramics in the City fair and has regular family days and activity days for children.
