As the artist says, “My works looks at the merging of fictional and real space, how stories and our memories can affect and alter our view of a place.My two current series of work come from alternative sides of the spectrum, fire and water, both elements are simultaneously beautiful but can also cause a place to be uninhabitable. In the pictures this state of flux is shown through the use of paint in describing space. It becomes the fictional space by altering and distorting the image. It grows across the surface in colour and pattern as though consuming it, leaving the landscapes uncertain of whether they are forming or falling apart. The fire series stems from my time spent in Chernobyl in Ukraine last year and specifically the time I spent in the red forest. The red forest is the most radioactive area in the Zone and was physically burnt red by the contamination. The paintings grew out of the stories told by our guide in the zone and my own drawings of the forest and deserted villages. In the work the fire like the radiation consumes and flattens the space making it hard for the viewer to access it, this was similar to my own experience of being in the red forest.The Swimming pool series also comes from my time in Chernobyl and my drawings of the pool in Pripyatt. Everyone that I spoke to on my trip hailed the city before its destruction as some sort of Utopia, a perfect mascot for what the Soviet Union could create. Though everyone I spoke to would also have been a child during their time there and their stories reflected common rose tinted memories, bleached by summer and time. My own childhood memories of idyllic holidays spent by the pool are distorted too, they have merged with oversaturated images of 60s california through the films I grew up watching. This altering of memory is the base of my swimming pool paintings, each pool merges with fictional ideas and images of pools and holidays. This tips them out of the real, allowing them to hover in and out of abstraction.”
